Creative & Humour
Yes, Thyroid Cancer is a form of cancer. Yes, we have to be monitored for recurrence, and we have a life-long condition due to our need for thyroid replacement hormone. However, we can also maintain our sense of humour.
We hope that you find something within this section of the TCC website that puts a smile on your face -- starting with some emoticons...

Favourite Practical Joke
From http://www.versuscancer.com/cancer-jokes.html
A favourite practical joke of radioactive iodine therapy patients is -- on your first day back in the same bed with your spouse/partner -- to toss a green glow stick under the covers. It is best if the spouse discovers the glow on their own, but you can help them along by lifting up the covers slightly.

The Tale of Millie Currie
by anonymous
This is the tale Of Millie Currie. Delivered by the doc In quite a hurry. In a paper cup Did she arrive. He said swallow her Quick to survive.
Over the tongue To the tummy. She never claimed To be yummy.
Once you’ve met her Off you go. Into isolation so You can glow.
In a few days you Are free to leave. Remember to cough Into your sleeve.
As like a leper you are Compelled to hide. A few more days of the L.I.D. you tried.
Look out for Mille in Your Whole Body Scan. You didn’t just lie there To get a nice tan!
In a few more weeks Millie will disappear. For her departure I do shed not one tear.
Any meeting with Millie, I do hope and pray, Won’t happen in the future as Cancer stays away.
Oh Babe, I Hate to Glow
(Sung to the tune of Peter, Paul and Mary’s “Leaving on a Jet Plane”)
by Megan Stendebach
I'm ready to glow
I'm standing here
Outside the door
With "Danger: Radiation!" on the sign
But the floor is covered
and so's the phone
the doctors hover
they're ready to go
already I'm so scared
'bout R A I
So kiss me and smile for me
Tell me that you'll call for me
Close the door, let's start this nuking show
'Cuz I'm stayin' in
i-so-la-tion
Don't know when I'll be home again
Oh babe, I hate to glow.
Now the time has come to leave you
Give me something sour to chew
I'll flush the john for-ty times day
Dream about the foods to come
Seafood, milk, and pizza, yum!
About the time I won't have to say...
Kiss me and smile for me
Tell me that you'll call for me
This is gonna cost a bunch of dough
'Cuz I'm stayin' in
i-so-la-tion
Don't know when I'll be home again
Glowin', from the treatment
(Glowin')
Don't know if I can spit again
(Glowin')..... <fade>

Visual Arts
Painting
Ever wonder about the Thyroid Cancer Canada logo? Here's the scoop. It's a butterfly because the thyroid gland is shaped like a butterfly. But look closely, and you'll see 2 people in profile in the wings. Jonathan (the artist) and his sister both are thyroid cancer patients. Jonathan was diagnosed at age 23 and his sister at age 19.
At the time of his diagnosis, Jonathan created this great painting to express the fear of what might be coming.
